Sitting at the bar of their new bottle shop, Bucket Boys, Clint and Johnathan look like the kind of guys you’d expect to find at your local pub.

Relaxed, friendly and with big appetites (they knocked over a huge plate of schnitzel during this interview), the craft beer enthusiasts are busy doing what they do best -- talking about beer with friends.

We took five minutes to catch up with the boys and find out more about their new bottle shop, craft beer and their favourite drop.

HOW DID THE TWO OF YOU MEET?

Johnathan [replies]: We got to chatting at work one day and we just kind of clicked. I wouldn’t say we were great friends or anything but we definitely had a lot in common.

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU HAD IN COMMON?

Johnathan [replies]: We both live in the area and we each have a real passion for craft beer, local ciders and Australian wine and spirits.

Clint [replies]: It wasn’t just beer and cider though. We both had experience working in bottle shops and we wanted to create something different from your regular retail outlet.

SO WOULD YOU SAY YOU HAD A SHARED VISION FOR A NEW KIND OF BOTTLE SHOP?

Johnathan [replies]: Definitely. The more we spoke to people the more we realised that there were a lot of beer lovers like us who wanted a place to hang out, try new drinks and feel part of a community.

YOU’VE OPENED A NEW BOTTLE SHOP CALLED BUCKET BOYS, WHICH YOUR WEBSITE DESCRIBES AS A HUB FOR BEER LOVERS, CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THE PLACE?

Clint [replies]: Well. It was the shared vision but if you’re talking about the look and feel of the store we’d say it was Mikkeller, Copenhagen, which also happens to be Jonathan’s favourite beer, and Wes Andersen.

Johnathan [replies]: Because we’re trying to create an experience we put a lot of effort into design so that it feels more like a pub or small brewery rather than a store.

OKAY. IT’S TIME TO WRAP UP.  SO, WE’LL ROLL THESE NEXT TWO QUESTIONS INTO ONE. IF YOU HAD TO RECOMMEND A NEW BEER TO SOMEONE IN THE AREA WHAT WOULD IT BE? AND FOR THOSE WHO DON’T DRINK WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE NON-BEER RELATED ACTIVITY.

Johnathan [replies]: For beer I’d choose Mikkeller and then pretty much any sport.

Clint [replies]: Tripel Karmalite and Black Metal.

Bucket Boys is located at Ground Floor, 300 Illawarra Rd, Marrickville. Opening hours are 10am-8pm Sunday to Thursday and 10am-9pm Friday to Saturday.
